Ali Zafar files defamation suit against Pakistani singer Meesha Shafi
After being accused of sexual harassment, Pakistani singer, musician and actor Ali Zafar filed 1 billion Rupees defamation suit against actor and singer Meesha Shafi on Saturday. Zafar, through his suit, has alleged that Meesha’s allegations against him are baseless and have tarnished his reputation.
The case came in the public eye when the Bhaag Milkha Bhaag actress released a statement on April 19 through her Twitter account, accusing Zafar of sexually harassing her on multiple occasions. ‘I have been subjected, on more than one occasion, to sexual harassment of a physical nature at the hands of a colleague from my industry: Ali Zafar […] It has been an extremely traumatic experience for me and my family […] I feel betrayed by his behaviour and attitude and I know that I’m not alone’, read Shafi’s statement.
Meesha’s allegations caused havoc in the Pakistani entertainment industry when she aligned herself with the #MeToo movement and American actress Rose McGowan, who started the global movement, called her ‘a heroine for our times’.
The Mere Brother Ki Dulhan actor had denied the allegations made by Meesha and had issued a legal notice to her. In the notice, Zafar accused Shafi of making ‘false, slanderous, and defamatory’ statements and demanded her to apologize for them.
On Saturday, Zafar’s counsel, Rana Intizar, filed the Rs. 1 billion defamation suit against Meesha in a district court in Lahore.
‘Be that as it may, that due to the defamatory campaign being spearheaded by the defendant, the plaintiff besides special damages in case of defamation further suffered the following damages: Mental torture Rs. 2 crore, Loss of contacts Rs. 8 crore, Loss of reputation/goodwill Rs. 50 crore, Loss of business opportunities Rs. 40 crore’, read the suit.
