Diljit Dosanjh’s portrayal of the Indian hockey team skipper in Soorma has generated an overwhelming response among his fans on social media.
The popular singer turned actor will be seen playing the role of Sandeep Singh in the biographical sports drama, which also features Taapsee Pannu, Angad Bedi, and Vijay Raaz. The film’s trailer has garnered more than 5 Million views on YouTube.
The film, directed by Shaad Ali, tells the story of Indian hockey player Sandeep Singh who got paralyzed from the waist down after an accidental gunshot.
But through his determination and hard work, he made a miraculous comeback to international hockey in 2008 and managed to lead the Indian team to win the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in 2009.
However, the Udta Punjab actor was hesitant about his own acting ability when he heard the script for the first time. ‘When Shaad sir narrated this script to me, then I didn’t believe it and then I went to Sneha madam (film’s producer Sneha Rajani of Sony Pictures) and told her to cast me in any film for free but don’t cast me in a hockey-based film because it will require a lot of hard work and I think I will not be able to pull this off’, said the 34 year old actor about his initial hesitance towards playing the role of a professional hockey player.
Diljit underwent a rigorous training program, by the real Sandeep Singh, to prepare for his role. ‘Sandeep Singh and his elder brother were always there on the film set, so I didn’t face many difficulties to portray the character of Sandeep Singh onscreen because they were monitoring the film shoot and if there were any mistakes from my side then, they quickly used to rectify that’, said Dosanjh when he was asked about his method of preparation for the role.
The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 13.
